It has to be said that rear-seat occupants enjoy surprising comfort and lots of legroom, which directly affects cargo capacity. So, clearly, designers of the A4 Avant care more about passengers than luggage -- a little odd for a wagon, don’t you think?
One thing that particularly stood out in my mind was the sheer abundance of high-tech features and accessories. Some are pretty cool and handy; others can be pretty complicated to use, like Audi’s Multimedia Interface (MMI). Also, it’s impossible to overlook the amazing quality, fit and finish in all aspects of the A4’s interior.
A beast on the road
Appreciating the true worth of the 2009 Audi A4 Avant goes beyond the flawless construction and myriad of world-class attributes. The brand’s quattro all-wheel drive technology needs no further presentation; truth be told, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more competent system on the market.
My tester literally made a mockery of the tough conditions brought by Mother Nature, safely hauling the entire family and confidently sprinting forward despite a segment-worst 211 horsepower. That’s because the 2.0-litre, direct-injected, turbocharged engine also boasts a segment-best 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm, allowing explosive takeoffs with virtually no turbo lag and a more than adequate top speed. Additionally, fuel economy is outstanding.
The 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission delivers ultra-quick gear shifts. It gears down smoothly and upshifts in strong, linear fashion. In both cases, the operation is marked by throttle blips, similar to sportier models.
Completing this awesome combination is a precise steering system offering a magnificent feel of the road, whether you drive using only your fingertips or grabbing the steering wheel with two firm hands.
Let’s recap…
Elegant, well-executed and stocked-full of premium amenities, the 2009 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI Premium quattro is definitely not the boring wagon I had envisioned driving. Granted, you must spend a couple of hours reading the owner’s manual in order to fully grasp the various gadgets. What’s more, you need to have some seriously-deep pockets, as my loaded tester was pretty much the most expensive model in its class.
