As promised, the all-new 2017 BMW 5 Series was unveiled today by the German automaker. This seventh generation of the midsize luxury sedan will hit the Canadian market in February. Pricing for the 530i xDrive and 540i xDrive models will be announced closer to launch.
Highlights include further enhanced driving dynamics, a maximized array of assistance systems, an unprecedented degree of connectivity (including the new Remote 3D View feature), and a command system that’s been improved once again.
More aerodynamic (class-leading 0.22 drag coefficient), lighter (up to 100 kg), and stiffer than its predecessor, the new 2017 BMW 5 Series uses more aluminum and magnesium than before. Under the hood, we find a new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with direct injection rated at 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque (530i xDrive) or a 3.0L 6-cylinder turbocharged unit that now produces 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.
In terms of safety, the next-generation BMW 5 Series marks another step toward autonomous driving. It is fitted as standard with a stereo camera, which teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the car. New features alongside the evasion aid and Crossing traffic warning are the Lane Change Assistant and Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. Let’s not forget the available remote parking system.
Making things even simpler for the driver, the new 5 Series comes with iDrive 6.0. In top trim, the system displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25” screen. It can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures (the latter new for 2017), or by touching the display controls directly. Meanwhile, the head-up display is 70% larger now.
