Just weeks ahead of the official reveal, Audi is presenting a first image of its new flagship SUV, the Q8. In order ot ensure maximum excitement for the new luxury utility model, the company released a sketch showing the back end of the model, the newest member of the Audi lineup.
The image shows a vehicle that hews closely to the Q8 concept first presented in Detroit last year. Some of the visual design cues, for example the thin band that connects the rear lights, also show a clear link with what Audi gave the new A7.
Audi refrained from revealing anything to do with the Q8’s front end, though spy shots have been circulating online that indicate that there as well, the move from concept to production version was a short, uneventful one.
For the moment, no word has bene forthcoming from Audi regarding the large SUV’s mechanics, but since the model will rest on the same platform as the underpinning the Q7, chances are good that the Q8 will feature similar V6 and V8 engines. The rumour mill also indicates a performance variant is in the works. The RS Q8 could join the lineup soon after the launch of the regular version.
It doesn’t end there. We can also expect to see a plug-in hybrid version introduced at some point. This variant, developed in partnership with Porsche, would get a range of about 50 km and leave an environmental footprint roughly similar to that of the Toyota Prius!
In terms of technology, it’s clear that the new Q8 SUV will push the boundaries for the segment. A suspension fitted with a 48-volt system is one of the more highly anticipations innovations we could see. This set-up aims to reduce if not entirely eliminate vehicle roll.
