60 years of Minis

Mini is celebrating an auspicious anniversary this year, that of its 60 years of existence. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, the company put on display a particularly flashy vehicle sure to attract attention.

Obviously, the history of the brand is cleaved into two - the pre-BMW period, and the post-acquisition era. That said, BMW has managed to conserve the unique personalities of the British brand and its products. 20 years after its “rebirth” under BMW rule, it’s job well done on that front. Alfa Romeo had nothing of particular note to unveil in LA this year, aside from a version of the Tonale concept on display at its stand but which kind of fell below the radar of those at the show. What garnered the most attention, rather, was what appeared to be a marble sculpture of the Giulia sedan. A bit of decorative art as interesting as it was… useless.

A virtual-reality experience allowed users to assist in the “birth” of this piece of art, an experience that cost us two or three minutes out of our day. When you go treasure-hunting like Auto123 did on this day at the auto show, you can’t always come away with a treasure…
