On the one hand, compact sedans have been a segment since the 1970s, and on the other hand, entry-level cars offer a less expensive way to get in for less affluent buyers who still want to drive a luxury car.
As it happens, the three finalists are in the more affordable category. The BMW 3 Series is a standard-raiser since it joined the automaker's lineup, the Lexus IS offers a nice range of engines and the upstart Genesis G70 delivers the goods on all levels without the prestige of a big name badge behind it.

This year, the Audi A7 is among the finalists because it offers several versions and is more practical with its hatchback. The Genesis G80 is brand new for 2021 and the value it offers is simply unbeatable. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, on the other hand, has been one of the standard setters in the segment for decades.
