Car and Driver claims several Porsche employees confided that the next 911 would feature a seven-speed, manual transmission. No, you don’t need to have your eyes checked: some manufacturers still see the point of investing in manual gearboxes.

Gear ratio and configuration are still unknown at the moment, but one thing’s for sure, drivers of the 911 (or 991 in Porsche speak) will have to tweak their downshifting technique in tight corners.

Manual transmissions have been on the endangered species list for a while now and have barely evolved compared to their automatic counterparts, at least in terms of the number of gears. More and more vehicles are using seven-speed autoboxes, and eight- and nine-speed affairs have already been developed and are on the verge of widespread deployment.

But why so many gears? It’s simple: to improve fuel efficiency and reduce engine noise on long-distance trips.

The question is, will this evolution really make a difference or will it be perceived as an obstacle to driving enjoyment for drivers who enjoy a good workout?

The next Porsche 911 will no doubt be one of the most highly anticipated models at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall. For this latest vintage, the 911 is expected to offer a roomier rear passenger area, increased passenger comfort, a more luxurious cabin and greater stability.
