From the M3 Concept Car to the Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, BMW's concept vehicles shed light on their new products and the possibilities to be had with them. The BMW Concept 1 Series tii does this while paying tribute to some of the company's historic models.

Tii stands for Touring International Injection, a designation first seen in the 1960's on the BMW 2002 - a car known for its performance and value. Today, the 1 Series tii gives an appearance of performance. Although there is no mention of the tii's power output, the 300 horsepower twin turbo 3 litre direct-injection inline-six found in the 2009 BMW 135i is not a bad place to start. Furthermore, BMW has attempted to quicken the tii by shedding pounds and improving its power to weight ratio.

At a stubby 4.36 meters long, the 1 Series is already nimble, but driving with the rear wheels further helps to balance weight equally front and rear. If, while driving the tii, you don't notice the weight reduction or even the improved aerodynamics, you will notice the more aggressive sports suspension. Meanwhile, everyone around you will notice you, owing to dramatic exterior styling and colour schemes.

Carbon fibre reinforced plastics are used throughout the tii: side mirror caps, rear lip spoiler, rear bumper inlay, air intake inlays, and other engine trim pieces. The tii's hood is also made of carbon fibre, with an asymmetric stripe running atop the car with inverted shades. There are also subtle hood fins, reminiscent of the BMW 3.0 CSL from the 1970's.

Today, carbon fibre treatments are enrolled in BMW's production vehicles, the most notable being the carbon fibre roof of the M6 which both reduces weight and lowers the centre of gravity. Although the tii's roof isn't made of this good stuff, it does forgo a weighty sunroof.

New bumpers and side sills, along with dark grill inlays, contribute to a chic look. The rear bumper also includes a diffuser design. From the front, the mirrored tii logo pronounces your restriction behind other drivers while BMW's stylish angel eyes contribute to a sinister effect.

Contrasting the tii's black and white base shades are numerous blue highlights (treatments valued at great expense by some manufacturers): leather stitching, seatbelts, gear shifter, tow hook, callipers (the front being 6-piston), and yes, one lug nut on each wheel. The wheels themselves are M3-like 18-inch five spoke alloys finished in dark chrome.

Inside, a white faced tachometer stands heterochromically attractive beside the dark speedometer. Matte alcantara upholsters much of the interior, including the gearshift knob, door lining, instrument panel, steering wheel, and seats. The aggressive front seats grab at their occupants while even offering the service of side airbag mediation.

With a simple six speed manual transmission and no iDrive, this BMW is a focused machine; but, it is far from outrageous. Not only does it lack a roll cage, but it also can carry three weight bearing friends in air-conditioned comfort. Since the 1 Series tii is the closest we may see to an M1 from BMW, the tii may be seen as customizing inspiration for fortunate 135i owners.
