Beyond those products, North America and the rest of the world can expect an even smaller Cadillac sedan, a compact sport-ute, and almost certainly a big-ticket roadster of the Evoq ilk.

Also on the agenda will be smaller V8s, high-tech inline-6s, and diesels, though that last powerplant will not see duty in North America unless there's some kind of huge change in the price or availability of traditional gasoline.

And Cadillac will be driven into the future by its back wheels, as GM accepts the perception of the rest of the world that rear-drive is the prestige choice. A couple of years ago this might have been cause for concern in those regions where Winter plays a starrign role, but sophisticated chassis and traction control systems will remove a lot of the bad weather risk of this move.

Cadillac's general emphasis will also change, to better reflect the tastes of the new people who will buy upscale vehicles through the next decade. Younger than the people who buy any brand of luxury model today, these consumers say they want to be proud to own and drive their future models, and that their vehicles must be attractive and fun-to-drive.

Current Cadillacs are not perceived as doing really well in any of those three areas, since their strongest attributes are luxuriousness, comfort and value, but then again none of the other luxury brands do particularly well at more than one of the future buyer requirements either.
