General Motors and Magna E-Car Systems, a subsidiary of Canadian-based Magna International, announced a demonstration fleet of nine Chevrolet Equinox Electric Vehicles (EV).
Magna E-Car Systems, which played a key role in the development of the Ford Focus Electric, fitted the popular crossover with a 105 kW (141 hp) electric motor that draws energy from a 33 kWh battery pack.
The pilot project will allow both GM and Magna E-Car Systems to assess the real-world performance and range of the Chevrolet Equinox EV while gathering critical information that will help develop green vehicles in the future.
This isn't the first time that GM uses the Chevrolet Equinox to test alternative powertrains. Back in 2008, over 100 hydrogen fuel cell-powered units hit the road as part of a joint demonstration with the U.S. Department of Energy.
