Chrysler to cut 13,000 jobs

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, DaimlerChrysler CEO, announced a number of important steps that will be taken in the near future to curb Chrysler's mounting losses. Yesterday, at the automaker's annual press conference, the good Doctor enumerated what will be done over the next year and a half.

The first step will be cutting 13,000 employees, 2,000 of which are in Canada, by 2009. Production capacity will be reduced by 400,000 units and the Delaware plant that builds the Aspen and Durango will be idled. Other cost-cutting moves will include reducing the number of product platforms from the current 12 to 7 by the year 2012.

These steps should save the company 4.5 billion again by 2009 and hopefully return the account balances on the positive side. To maintain momentum during and after the cuts, Chrysler will be introducing a number of new products including smaller more fuel efficient vehicles and some hybrids.

The Chrysler could even be up for grabs to the highest bidder. Talks have apparently already begun and rumour has it the General Motors is already intertwined in negotiations.
