Though Mazda’s lineup includes the popular Mazda3, the automaker has work to do to secure its place in the sun. Mazda openly admits that the CX-7 is weirdly positioned in relation to its rivals, has announced the demise of the RX-8 and is preparing to redesign the Mazda6, which didn’t prove as successful as anticipated.
A less-than-ideal picture, but the automaker is planning a major move.
With the launch of the CX-5 crossover at the upcoming Frankfurt Show, Mazda will be starting a 10-year metamorphosis with the goal of establishing itself as the “Volkswagen of Japan” in the eyes of consumers.
The crossover will not only represent a way to break into a highly competitive and lucrative segment, but also offer the possibility of introducing several hybrid, electric or extended range (think Chevrolet Volt) variants.
The CX-5 platform will serve as the basis for the next Mazda6 (scheduled for a facelift in 2012) and shortened so that the next-generation Mazda3 can use it as well. The CX-7 will also be replaced by a bigger model dubbed CX-8.
As expected, the SkyActiv technology will be at the heart of this transformation, extending its influence across the Mazda range in just five years. What’s more, the new replacement models will be much lighter (and thus more fuel efficient) thanks to the use of materials like carbon fibre reinforced plastic.
If the plan works and sales pick up, there’s always the possibility that Mazda starts developing a rotary engine sports car destined to replace the legendary RX-7.
