Former World Rally driver Carlos Sainz, driving a VW Touareg has moved into the lead of the Dakar Rally for the first time in 2010 after Stephane Peterhansel was delayed on stage 5.

Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel, a 9-time Dakar winner had led the event for the past two days, but had to stop twice with transmission problems on his BMW.

Peterhansel’s problems allowed Sainz to move up to first in the overall standings, although the Spaniard had to settle for second on stage five behind his Volkswagen teammate, American Mark Miller.

Nasser Al-Attiyah, behind the wheel of another BMW truck, is currently second in the standings, ahead of Miller.

Carlos Sousa is a first non-VW competitor in the standings. He is currently fourth in his Mitsubishi.
