Stéphane Peterhansel (BMW) took his maiden victory of the 2011 Dakar on Tuesday. The Frenchman beat Volkswagen drivers Nasser Al Attiyah and Carlos Sainz.

It was the first win for BMW since the start of the 2011 Dakar.

Yesterday, Peterhansel was already dominant but he lost time following a puncture and dropped down the field.

The Frenchman took revenge in the first real navigation stage of the race, with the first kilometres ran in the mighty Atacama Desert.

Carlos Sainz remains in in first place in the overall classification, 3’45 ahead of Al Attiyah and 4’54 ahead of Peterhansel. These three drivers have already pulled an impressive lead, leaving fourth place driver Giniel De Villiers (Volkswagen) more than 20 minutes behind.

The 6th stage, held on Friday will be one of the most difficult stages of the 2011 Dakar. Several drivers consider it as the turning point of this year’s event, as the cars will drive through the Atacama Desert before a welcome rest day on Saturday.
