Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit, driver of an X-raid BMW truck, claimed his first Dakar stage win on the Santiago to San Juan stage today, Wednesday.
Event leader Carlos Sainz had a difficult day. The Spaniard sustained damage to his VW Touareg early during the timed stage, and although he made it to the finish, he was 7 minutes slower than Chicherit, and 5m38s down on Nasser Al-Attiyah's time.
The incident allowed the Qatari driver to reduce Sainz's lead on top of the standings from ten minutes to four and a half minutes going into the final three days of the raid.
Behind Sainz and Al-Attiyah, American Mark Miller continues to maintain VW's overall one-two-three, with Stephane Peterhansel still ahead of Chicherit in fourth.
NASCAR driver Robby Gordon had a relatively good day, finishing 7th behind the wheel of his Hummer.
