Chrysler Group LLC underwent major changes over the past year, having significantly improved the interior quality of many products and introduced the new Pentastar V6 engine with the sole purpose of restoring its image and becoming more profitable than ever.

And then there's the Dodge Caliber which, similar to the ugly gal no one wanted to invite at the prom, hasn't really evolved since coming to market in 2006 and has been tossed aside by the company. Of course, the inevitable had to happen sooner or later.

Well, Allpar today confirmed that production will end on November 23, 2011 and that a new Dodge compact is scheduled to appear during calendar-year 2012 – adding further weight to our June report that the successor of the Caliber will be launched at the NAIAS in Detroit.

Fiat will likely influence the design and motivation of the new car, apparently with a choice of a turbocharged 1.4L, a 2.0L and a 2.4L. Also, expect the CVT to be dropped for either a conventional autobox or Fiat's automated manual transmission.

People will remember the Caliber for a few good hits, including a powerful SRT-4 version, liftgate-integrated MusicGate speakers, illuminated cupholders and removable flashlight.

A total of 4,189 units were sold during the first seven months of 2011 compared to 5,847 the year before.
