Commemorative editions of coins or plates or new cars or anything else by definition involve asking the public not to forget something, so I guess you could say that the limited edition versions of its Dodge Viper SRT10, Dodge SRT4 and Dodge Ram SRT10 models qualify.

That is to say, they're being launched by DaimlerChrysler Canada so consumers won't forget that it sells hotrod versions of those models. The Windsor firm prefers to say that these three models have been launched ''to celebrate the excitement, power and performance of three of the hottest production vehicles on the road today.''

Whatever the reason they're on sale, the 2005 Dodge Viper SRT10, 2005 Dodge SRT4 and 2005 Dodge Ram SRT10 Commemorative Edition models will feature distinctive paint schemes of blue ''dual-fang'' racing stripes over a white body colour.

They will also include unique interior features, a numbered plaque (they are ''limited edition'' models), a special SRT book, and Commemorative Edition sticker prices. The SRT4 model is $1,998 over the regular MSRP, the Ram SRT10 is $5,495 over the regular MSRP, and the Viper SRT10 is $5,595 over the regular MSRP.

For once, these ''limited edition'' models will actually be that very thing, with only 100 Dodge Viper SRT10 models and 200 each of Dodge SRT4 and Dodge Ram SRT10 models for all of North America.

''Our SRT team of designers and engineers continue to amaze us with their ability to transform some of our popular production vehicles into ultimate and outrageous driving machines,'' says Mike Accavitti, the vice-president of marketing at DaimlerChrysler Canada. ''The new Commemorative Edition SRT vehicles provide the benchmark performance and affordability you expect from our SRT products and match them with the distinct interior and exterior race-inspired styling cues that put them in a class by themselves.''

The Viper model is said to honor more than a dozen years of ''outrageous street performance and championship wins,'' and is offered with a Stone White exterior and dual Viper Blue stripes. The interior features blue accent stitching on the shift knob and boot, parking brake boot, steering wheel and floor mats as well as bright sill plates.

Not much to commemorate with the SRT4 except that it's supposed to be ''fun, affordable and fast'' and the fact that it's said to be the ''fastest production car for under $28,000.''

The Commemorative Edition Dodge SRT4 also features a Stone White exterior enhanced with Electric Blue stripes, with blue accent stitching on the seats, floor mats, steering wheel and shift boot. Stainless steel door-sill plates complete the Dodge SRT4 Commemorative Edition package.

DaimlerChrysler doesn't even try to explain the Commemorative Edition Dodge Ram SRT10, but it features Bright White exterior paint with Electric Blue stripes. Interior enhancements include blue stitching on the seats, shift boot, shift knob and steering wheel, while the floor mats are embroidered in matching stitching with the SRT10 logo. There are also standard polished wheels, brushed aluminum scuff plates, and hard tonneau cover.

Formed in 2002, SRT is DaimlerChrysler in-house automotive performance group, similar to the SVT Group at Ford and AMG at Mercedes-Benz and so on and so on.

Accavitti says SRT ''creates some of the Chrysler Group's boldest, most distinctive products that deliver benchmark performance at the lowest price. ''

In all, there are 10 SRT-badged Chrysler and Dodge performance vehicles, all of which will be in dealer showrooms by year's end. They include the Dodge Viper SRT10 Convertible and Coupe, Dodge SRT4, Dodge Ram SRT10 regular cab and Quad Cab, Dodge Magnum SRT8, Dodge Charger SRT8, Chrysler Crossfire SRT6 Coupe and Roadster, and Chrysler 300C SRT8.

The all-new 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 arrives in showrooms early next year. For more information about SRT, please visit www.dodge.com/srt.
