One of the leaders in the battle to preserve the environment, California recently adopted new regulations concerning emissions produced by volatile organic substances found in auto paints. These regulations will come into force in 2009 in the South Coast and South Joaquin districts of Southern California.

The only way paint manufacturers can comply with the new law is by reducing the amount of traditional solvents and by replacing them with water. Since water dries slower than solvents, one could argue that these environmental regulations will affect productivity and profitability in body repair shops. Well, that's not true! DuPont Cromax, specialized in water-based paints, developed a process that allows a second coat to be applied without waiting for the first one to dry. In addition, the special paints contain half the amount of solvents found in regular paints.

In Europe, more than 5,000 body repair shops have been using this technique for a few years now. Some Californian shops will do the same starting next spring. Other states as well as Canada are considering adopting similar measures.
