Australian driver Mark Webber put his Renault-powered Red Bull RB7 on top of the chart Friday in both free practice sessions held in preparation for the Grand Prix of Spain in Barcelona.
In the morning session, Webber set the fastest time ahead of his teammate, Sebastian Vettel. Nico Rosberg’s third time in the Mercedes W02 proved that the upgrades are working well.
Fernando Alonso was fourth in the Ferrari 150 ahead of the surprising rookie Sergio Pérez in the Ferrari-powered Sauber C30.
During the second session, Webber was again fastest, beating McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Vettel. Hamilton explained afterwards that there is a big difference in the two Pirelli compounds and that would produce a very interesting race.
Button was fourth ahead of Alonso, Rosberg and Michael Schumacher in the second Mercedes.
The two Lotus Renaults were a bit disappointing with Nick Heidfeld in 10th place and Vitaly Petrov in 12th.
