We all know the important role that fluids play in our own health and well-being.

They're every bit as vital to the overall maintenance and performance of our vehicles. Just like us, our car relies on fluid to keep its running parts in good working order. They're an essential component in many systems, including the engine, transmission and brakes.

Engine Oil
It's such a simple part of our vehicle maintenance, yet regular oil changes are one of the most important steps we can take to ensure not only the engine's longevity, but its ability to maximize performance and run as fuel efficiently as possible.

Engine Oil

Whether you use mineral or synthetic, the main function of motor oil is to provide lubrication for all of the engine's moving parts. This prevents friction and heat buildup, reducing wear on its components. Without lubrication, the grinding of parts together results in more wear, and the distribution of metal filings throughout the engine. Eventually they either seize up, or break, causing major engine failure.

Following the recommended oil change schedule ensures that clean, properly lubricating oil is circulating through your engine – while the old oil, containing dirt, metal particles and other impurities, is drained away and disposed of.

There are many different types of oil, from inexpensive conventional oil to full synthetic, depending on the age and use of your vehicle. Generally, the more expensive oils contain more additives to last longer without breaking down, and are recommended for vehicles that are expected to perform hard in either harsh or dirty conditions.

Viscosity, determined by the numbers on the bottle's label, refer to the oil's ability to flow at different temperatures. Oils are rated from 0-60, with the "W" referring to weight. A single digit rating means the oil is a "straight-grade", while double digits mean that it is "multi-grade" and works in a variety of conditions.

The lower the first number, the thinner the oil, and the easier it will be for it to circulate throughout your engine, keeping everything well-lubricated during winter's worst. Therefore, a 5W30 oil is a good multipurpose oil that works well in a broad range of temperatures - it flows easily in extreme cold yet is safe to use in warmer temperature. Hotter weather requires a higher grade such as 10W30, another multi-grade oil.

Coolant
Coolant is a heat-transfer fluid designed to take heat away from the engine and circulate it through the radiator. It's comprised of anti-freeze and water, usually 50/50, but with a higher ratio of coolant in the winter. Without proper cooling, the engine can overheat and seize. It's important to have coolant levels checked during regular maintenance.

Our next installement will break down the others fluids that are vital to your car.
