Looking back to Ford's 1960s era 24 Hours of Le Mans winning glory days, when it challenged Ferrari and took the sports car World Manufacturer's Championship in 1966, the world's number two automaker is getting ready to launch the most expensive new vehicle to ever wear the blue oval badge.

The GT, initially to be called GT40 after the brand's mid-engine sports car best remembered in baby blue and orange "Gulf" regalia, will come to market next summer for less money than initially expected, but still a substantial USD$139,995 (CAD$183,167), not including freight charges of approximately USD$1,225 (CAD$1,600).

"The Ford GT is a showcase of Ford Motor Company's heritage, and its design and engineering capability," stated Marty Collins, Ford Division general marketing manager. "For drivers who share our passion, it would be equally desirable at twice the price."

The only options will be lighter weight alloy wheels, an audio system upgrade, painted brake calipers and a race stripe decal scheme.

Thus far over 700 requests have been taken for the new domestic supercar, with many of the expectant owners being music and film celebrities, as well as professional athletes. The exact number of orders, that include deposits, has not been announced.

Ford is feeling positive about the new car's potential sales however, expecting to sell about 3,500 GTs in the U.S. over its limited two-year model cycle.
