Its been known for 40 years as the "King of the Road". But this spring, the name of Ford's extreme Mustang- the GT500KR- may be the cause of some confusion. The powerful and striking model is readying for a starring role in a remake of the hit TV series "Knight Rider".

Mix-ups will be inevitable.

"It's purely a coincidence and a nice one at that," said Al Uzielli a senior advisor to Ford Global Brand Entertainment. "Auto enthusiasts will know what KR stands for. But most viewers will probably think it means Knight Rider; at least at first."

Hasselhoff has retired his intelligent Trans-AM and leading role, though his characters long-lost son, Michael Tracer, now takes the wheel of the new KR model. Estimated output of the 40th Anniversary Edition car is 540 horsepower. The show will also give Ford the chance to showcase their innovative SYNC technology on TV.

Several versions of the new KITT car were built for filming- including some specially tuned stunt models to better handle aggressive, high-speed maneuvers.

If ratings on the show turn out well, NBC plans to turn the show into a weekly series this fall.
