Modifications include unique linear-rate springs and Tokico shocks out back and in front as well, and the result is good traction considering how much of the Mach's weight sits on the front end. With judiciously-applied throttle, enthusiastic starts and corner exits are not necessarily tire-fryers.

The hot ticket in brakes these days seems to be the Italian Brembo's - and the Mach 1 has them - big 13-inchers in front and 11.7's out back. Needless to say, they are plenty to haul down the 1,600-kg 'Stang from any speed it can go, the upper reaches of which we experienced on a test track.

Completing the rolling stock are beefy 245/45-17 performance tires mounted on wheels styled to look like the best looking factory rims of the '60's, the Magnum 500. The old ones still look better despite being only 15-inchers, small by current standards, but the new ones still look cool.

The Mach 1 is certainly a big step up from past versions in overall handling balance, especially considering the solid rear axle. The front end turns into corners with good grip, and the car can then be "steered" with the throttle, the best part of rear-drive cars. Call this one very "tossable."
