Ford announced the upcoming launch of a new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, direct injection EcoBoost engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission in North America.

Described as the “most technically advanced and efficient engine” Ford’s ever produced, the most recent innovation will offer the same performance as a 4-cylinder engine, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

This is a first for the blue oval brand, who’s never developed anything smaller than four cylinders.

In recent news, Ford had used the engine in the B-MAX, and industry observers believed it was destined exclusively for the European market.

Today’s announcement means the Fiesta and Focus may feature the new EcoBoost engine in Canada and the U.S. This would be a logical move considering the fact that automakers will have to meet to ever-stricter fuel efficiency standards.

None of this has been confirmed, however, and we’ll have to wait for the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall to know more about the engine and Ford’s plans for it.

In 2006, Ford had promised that 90% of its North American products would feature an EcoBoost option by 2013 and that 1.5 million EcoBoost engines would be produced annually.

For now, the automaker hasn’t revealed much information on the new 8-speed gearbox, saying more details will be forthcoming. We also learned that an electronic CVT designed for hybrid vehicles will go into production during the fourth quarter of 2012.
