Herbert Kohler, Daimler’s head of future mobility and advanced engineering, confirmed that future AMG models from Mercedes-Benz would be available with hybrid technology in order to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The German automaker's high-performance division decided to jump on the hybrid bandwagon that includes stop-start and regenerative braking technology.

However, the innovative flywheel system used on the Porsche 918 to store energy and boost power is not a path the company would be following, according to Kohler.

On the other hand, a Chevrolet Volt-style range-extender (featuring a gas-powered engine/generator to charge the battery) is a type of vehicle Mercedes-Benz is developing and Kohler said it would have the technology testing ''on the road very soon.'' The firm is accelerating work on the high-performance SLS E-cell as well.
