The Korean automaker figures it’s been on the sidelines of the hybrid bandwagon long enough.

Acknowledging that global demand for fully electric vehicles has not grown as fast as anticipated, Hyundai’s luxury division, Genesis, is pivoting toward hybrid technology. And leading the way as the automaker ventures into virgin territory will be the midsize GV80 SUV. It has the honour of debuting the brand’s next-generation 2.5 Turbo Hybrid system.

Tried-and-true mechanical foundation
We’ve seen a system very similar to this new one before, actually. The new hybrid architecture mirrors the parallel configuration used in the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid. It pairs a turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors. The first motor functions as a starter-generator for engine ignition and energy regeneration, while the second acts as a primary drive unit capable of propulsion and smart regenerative braking.

Together, the system generates a total output of about 347 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. That represents a noticeable performance jump over the base 4-cylinder gas model, and it matches the torque output of the range-topping V6. Power is routed to enable an estimated 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.1 seconds.

The setup also incorporates the Hyundai Motor Group's first liquid-cooled battery system for a hybrid, optimizing thermal management and power delivery under load.

Genesis estimates a 25-percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to the conventional 4-cylinder GV80, though final ratings for all-wheel-drive configurations remain pending.

Like an all-electric driving experience
Genesis engineered the powertrain to deliver a smooth, linear power delivery that mimics an all-electric driving experience. The SUV defaults to electric power at startup, remaining in pure EV mode up to roughly 30 km/h, while delivering an 18-percent faster throttle response and predictive energy management based on road conditions.

To mark the introduction of the hybrid powertrain, the GV80 features minor aesthetic updates, including a redesigned front grille and new wheel patterns. Inside, the cabin introduces new two-tone leather combinations, among them Obsidian Black with Taiga Green and Ultramarine Blue with Travertine Beige, complemented by real wood accents.

The GV80 Hybrid is scheduled to launch to market shortly after its unveiling.
