Today marks the start of the new pilot project on low-speed vehicles (LSV) in Quebec. As announced a month ago by the Minister of Transport, Julie Boulet, electric vehicles are now legal in the province.
So far, only two models have received the green light from the government: the ZENN two-seat hatchback and the Nemo urban pickup truck. Both are manufactured in Quebec and exclusively powered by electricity.
LSVs will be limited to roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h or under. Also, a bright orange triangle will be affixed to the back in order to alert other drivers.
Quebec's pilot project will last a minimum of three years and possibly reach five. This trial period will allow authorities to evaluate how LSVs and regular vehicles share the road. The ultimate goal is to make electric cars permanently legal in Quebec by the end of the project.
