In a move to combat negative perceptions about product quality and bring warranty coverage in line with advancements in assembly practices and technological advancements, GM announced extended warranty coverage for
its 2007 model line. The extended powertrain coverage protects major drivetrain components for a period of 5 years or 160,000 kilometres. Roadside assistance and courtesy transportation is also included within this period.
But GM isn't the only carmaker to offer a 160,000 kilometre warranty, so some confusion likely resulted when they claimed to have the best warranty coverage in the industry. Mitsubishi also has a 160,000 kilometre warranty on its products. Vehicles are covered for a ten year period- or double the time period of GM's warranty.
So it would seem that Mitsubishi in fact offers customers the best powertrain warranty. Their basic warranty is also superior to that of GM-
offering customers an additional 20,000 to 40,000 kilometres and 1 to 2 years of coverage depending on the brand with which it is compared. Additionally, Mitsubishi's roadside assistance has no mileage limit, whereas GM's coverage runs out after 160,000 kilometres.
GM brands Buick, Hummer, Cadillac and Saab carry a better corrosion warranty than Mitsubishi, with 4-years / 80,000 kilometres of coverage versus 3-years and 60,000 kilometres. Both GM and its various brands carry a superior rust-perforation warranty as well.
Rounding out the match, Mitsubishi's coverage against emissions defects is at least 1 year / 20,000 kilometres better than GM's.
So who really has the best warranty?
