Great news from Michelin. The legendary French manufacturer has finally created a new winter tire to replace the X-Ice 3 and its aging technology. The new kid in town is the X-Ice Snow, a brand-new product the details of which we reported on previously.

Our first driving impressions were interesting especially since the tests were carried out during a snowstorm.

Michelin has also launched a factory studded tire, the X-Ice North which was specifically created for our climate (it even has a small maple leaf inscribed on its sidewalls to indicate that it was made in Canada, at the company’s Nova Scotia plant). You’ll find an illustrated report here.

It should be noted that Michelin recently launched a winter-approved all-seasons tire, the CrossClimate, which stands out with a rather original tread design. It is manufactured in Poland. This type of tire is designed for drivers who use their cars infrequently both in winter and summer. Less recommended for major winter conditions, it will cope well enough with lighter snow and ice. The main advantage is that it can stay on the car year-round.

For owners of performance or grand touring cars, Michelin offers a revised version of its Alpine Pilot, now identified as PA-5.

Finally, it should be noted that the Michelin Group includes BFGoodrich tires, whose Winter T/A KSI replaces the former Winter Slalom. It features a more-precise directional tread pattern that makes it an attractive choice as an affordable mid-range tire.

Also under the Michelin banner is Uniroyal with its "budget" winter tire, the Tiger Paw Ice & Snow, which can be had with studs. A bit of old technology but useful for those who don't necessarily expect exceptional performance.
