Exactly 20 years ago today, one of the most revered 6-cylinder engines was offered for the first time. Known worldwide as the VR6, this spunky 6-pot was also the first of its kind from Volkswagen. In North America, it debuted in 1992.
Initially made available in the Passat and Corrado, it steadily found its way under the bonnets of the GTI, Jetta and the Touareg.
Of the multiple advantages to the VR6, the most commendable was its narrowness, allowing it to fit where typical V6 engines would not. Its single head design, made possible by the 15 degree angle, made for fewer part and more room in the engine compartment.
Various displacements have existed, from 2.8L up to 3.6L with outputs ranging from 172hp to nearly 300.
And for those that like tuning their cars, if you've got a VR6, make sure you select a proper exhaust kit. Few engines sound as good as a VR6 under load.
