While the majority of these top sellers are excellent vehicles, I've spoken at length about the merits of Ford's new family hauler.

From its understated good looks to its surprisingly agile driving dynamics (the Freestyle shares "platforms" with the Volvo S80 and XC90), to the most accommodating third row in the industry, to its surprisingly thrifty fuel consumption ratings, it's no wonder that it is such a strong contender in the retail market and overall.

Despite a near total remake of its Explorer SUV, positioning it as one of the best vehicles in its 4x4 capable class for on-road driving dynamics, Ford is not reporting big gains. larger SUVs, although it remains midsize despite its available V8 engine and slick six-speed automatic transmission, or possibly because its subtle restyling doesn't relate a strong enough message to consumers about all that has changed under the skin.

I have been critical of Ford for this reason on a number of occasions. When it redesigned its Windstar minivan and gave it the Freestar designation, most would-be buyers couldn't see enough of a difference between the outgoing van and newcomer to justify upgrading, despite major improvements throughout. The new Explorer may be suffering from the same fate, although buyers looking for an SUV capable of hauling heavy loads and/or managing light- to medium-duty off-road adventures would be wise to consider it.
