Global push
In 2008 Infiniti began to sell vehicles in Western Europe. (Infiniti was already in Russia prior to 2008). Forsyth said the phased rollout is "on time and on target." He noted also that there is currently a six-month waiting list for FX models in Europe, and that the new EX35 has been particularly well received there.

The brand will also launch its first diesel engine in Europe in 2010.

Globally, the brand sold 150,000 units in 2008.

Pre-owned progress
2008 was also the first for Infiniti Canada's Certified Pre-Owned Program (CPO), which was introduced to its retailers last November. Forsyth noted that CPO sales have increased every month since. He also noted that the G Sedan is clearly the CPO volume leader. Used G cars are particularly sought after, said Forsyth, because of their reputation for reliability and durability: "Consumer Reports really likes the G cars, and have given them great ratings."

G line is the main line
Infiniti's G37 line of sedans, coupes, and convertibles, is the brand's bread and butter. Forsyth calls it "our leader." As Infiniti's volume nameplate, it has a biggest role to play in moving the brand forward. According to Forsyth, Infiniti will always position the G37, more or less, at the entrance of the Infiniti experience.

Infiniti's G37 line of sedans, coupes, and convertibles, is the brand's bread and butter.

"But that's not to say, we wouldn't try something there (below G37), if it makes sense, and is consistent with the overall imagery of Infiniti."

One of the particular strengths of the G cars is its ability to appeal to a diverse range of buyers. Luxury buyers tend to be more mature, but Forsyth noted that G's sportiness makes it equally appealing to younger buyers.

"We get a surprising number of young families that purchase the G Coupes. They have small children and need room for them, but want something that's fun to drive and gives them superior performance."

Hybrid future
While the parent company, Nissan, is making major moves into the EV (electric vehicle) market, Infiniti appears headed toward a hybrid future.

Next year, Infiniti is expected to debut a new rear-drive hybrid powertrain on the flagship M sedan. Infiniti will then introduce this hybrid technology to other models in the range, though no timetable has been announced for the roll-out.

A first step toward that future was the unveiling (in Geneva) of the Infiniti Essence Concept. The beautiful front-engine, two-seat, rear-drive super coupe, clearly marked Infiniti's intended hybrid direction -- sexy performance, with a hint of green.

The concept was packing a 434-hp twin-turbo version of the 3.7-litre V6, and a 158-hp electric motor, that is incorporated into its transmission. With this powertrain, it was noted that the Essence is capable of "very high speeds where conditions allow, zero emissions where they don't."
