The sales figures are in, and for the month of July two of the largest Japanese carmakers have once again demonstrated blistering results by out-performing the market. Toyota overtook Ford in terms of July sales with 241,000 units. This comes despite Fords year-to-date sales increase of well over 20%. Additionally, American Honda Motor Company outsold the Chrysler group for the month with 152,000 units and came within about 20,000 of overtaking Daimler-Chrysler.

Analysts expected the sales drops posted by the big-three for the month of July, though the results may be misleading. A year back, the Detroit automakers launched employee pricing incentives, thereby kicking off the strongest sales month in the history of the industry.

It's a big set of shoes to fill, on paper.

Neither Toyota or Honda took part in employee pricing during that period, and both broke records with their sales last month. But it isn't celebrations and record-setting for all of the Japanese carmakers. Nissan, while waiting for new and updated models to roll out, posted a 19.5% decrease in sales for the month compared to the previous year.

Overall, car sales in the USA had experienced a drop of about 17%.

If the old business adage that performance relative to the industry average is a good indicator of the strength and capability of a firm, then Honda and Toyota are healthy as a horse.
