President and CEO of Jeep Michael Manley has motioned that the automaker is toying with the idea of offering diesel engines in two or three years’ time, giving consumers an alternative that would help them combat steadily rising gas prices.
Manley says the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee could be the first models to introduce diesel technology. The strategy would also help the brand, famous for the legendary off-road capabilities of its models, to conform to North American fuel consumption and emissions standards.
According to Manley, offering a diesel option on select products “makes absolute sense”, as 80% of Jeeps sold in Europe are diesel powered. He does however want to “make sure there is a sufficient marketplace here to make it make sense from a business perspective”.
Jeep attempted to sell diesel engines twice in the past, but thought better of it each time. Will the third time be the charm?
