Korean SUV is the Surprise 4x4 of the Year
To most automotive journalists and consumers alike, the Kia Sorento is surprisingly good. While the Korean automaker's cars are well made for the money, no one expected a midsize SUV as polished as the Sorento.

Attractively styled, nicely finished inside and out, luxuriously appointed with available leather and woodgrain, roomy with seating for up to 7, and extremely capable both on and off the road, the Sorento is one of the best buys of 2003.
These attributes had a great deal to do with its victory as 4x4 Magazine's overall 4x4 of the year. To put things into perspective, it eclipsed both the new Volvo XC90 and Volkswagen Touareg as it climbed to top spot.

Of the two entry-premium marques, only the VW has serious off-road capability, with the Volvo best for light duty off-road work. While the Kia impressed in day to day functionality and convenience characteristics, it was its off-road prowess that pushed it over the top.
"Everyone was struck by how well designed the Kia is, how well put together it is and most importantly how proficient it is in sticky, tricky off-road situations, stated 4x4 Magazine. "Yes, there are those who will be put off by the badge, but...they're missing out on driving one of the best cars currently found on the market."
