But the true innovation with the M lies in its multiple components. The new generation is available in two flavours: a Touring model powered by a 330-hp V6 engine and a sportier variant housing an adapted version of the V8 on duty in the Nissan Titan, producing over 420 hp in this application. Both engines are coupled with a 7-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode.
Also noteworthy is the fact that while first available with rear-wheel drive, an all-wheel-drive system is also on the options list of both engines.
But mostly, the M offers a large number of technological innovations that will enable the sedan to efficiently position itself in its luxury segment. Among them, a lane departure warning system forces distracted drivers to guide the car back to the middle of the lane and automatically applies the brakes if they fail to do so.
A blind spot detection system is also on board, as is a number of other safety and comfort features.
“I believe the new M represents the first step in an all-new direction. In 2012, it will also be available with a hybrid drive system entirely developed by Nissan. We believe that this is the direction consumers mindful of their image want us to take,” says Nakamura.
The vice-president declined to elaborate on Infiniti’s future projects, but with a big grin and a knowing look he declared that “several new projects are currently in the works to better position the Infiniti brand. While the new, recently unveiled G and QX introduce certain changes in terms of style and power (the QX can now haul up to 8,000 lbs, for instance), the new luxury sedans like the Q will be the ones that allow Infiniti to revive its tradition.”
The new Infiniti M will be available in Canada in March 2010 and will be exhibited at the Montreal and Toronto auto shows alongside the Essence prototype.
