The current Mazda MX-5 is getting ready to wear a colour absent from its regular catalog. Dubbed the Roadster FSW Ver.2, a new yellow-painted version will be produced, though your your odds of seeing one in the flesh will be slim to none. Mazda is making only six units, all destined for the Japanese market.
Those eager to win the right to purchase one will need to enter a raffle during the Mazda Fan Festa at Fuji Speedway on October 3 and 4, 2026. You still have to get there.
The project brings together four Japanese dealerships: Kanto Mazda, Koshin Mazda, Shizuoka Mazda and Tokai Mazda Sales. According to Kanto Mazda's announcement, three cars will be allocated on each day of the event. This is thus a dealer-led initiative carried out with the participation of a Mazda division, rather than a new factory edition offered across the entire network.
A colour reminiscent of the 1992 Miata
The official name for the Roadster FSW Ver.2’s finish is Sunflower Yellow. Its execution has been entrusted to Mazda Engineering & Technology, which will issue a certificate of authenticity with each car. Yellow accents are also found on select door trim panels, air vents and the key fob, according to Kanto Mazda.
For Canadian Miata enthusiasts, this release might bring back certain memories. Mazda first offered the MX-5 Miata in Sunburst Yellow in Canada in 1992, during the first generation's run. The new Japanese shade carries a different name, so it would be inaccurate to frame the FSW Ver.2 as the return of the exact same paint code. Rather, the connection lies in the reappearance of a yellow MX-5 produced in extremely limited numbers.
An extra fee that includes a trip to Hiroshima
The FSW Ver.2 package costs 1,452,000 yen, or some $12,900 CAD. That cost is for just the package, meaning it comes on top of the price of the Roadster S Special Package on which it’s based. The price does cover the features specific to this version, but also a two-day, one-night trip to Hiroshima, during which buyers will get tours of Mazda headquarters, the brand's museum and Mazda Engineering & Technology facilities.
According to what the dealers are saying, interested buyers must apply in person at Fuji Speedway. The six winners will earn the right to purchase their car from one of the participating dealerships; the draw is not a free vehicle giveaway.
The limited run will remain exclusive to Japan. No Canadian release of the Roadster FSW Ver.2 has been announced. And for now anyways, there’s no indication that the creation of these six yellow MX-5s to be sold off at Fuji Speedway is a harbinger of new colours coming to the product offering here in Canada or anywhere else.
