Mercedes-AMG is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017. Yep, that’s five decades of world-class driving performance from the iconic German brand.

In order to start the year with a bang, Mercedes-AMG chose the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to expand the AMG GT family of sports cars with the addition of the Mercedes-AMG GT C Coupe, which joins the previously announced AMG GT C Roadster. Both are positioned between the AMG GT S and AMG GT R.

“We are kicking off our anniversary year with the exclusive "Edition 50" model of the new AMG GT C Coupe,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “We are also taking this opportunity to refine the AMG GT and AMG GT S, both visually and technically.”

All new 2018 models in the AMG GT family are now identifiable by the distinctive AMG Panamericana grille, but the GT C is wider at the rear—just as wide as the almighty GT R, in fact.

As for performance, Mercedes-AMG is restructuring the range of output/torque variants of the 4.0L twin-turbo V8: The entry-level AMG GT now puts out 469 hp (+13), the GT S produces 515 hp (+12), and the new GT C is rated at 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque.

Of course, we could spend hours talking about the many formidable details and technical specs of these cars, but the one thing you absolutely cannot miss is the following video that presents what the half-century-old Mercedes-AMG brand is all about:
