The Alfa Romeo Stelvio created a buzz in the compact SUV category with the introduction of the 505-hp Quadrifoglio version; now Mercedes-AMG responds with shock and awe to retake the power crown: meet the GLC 63.
Moving ahead of the current 362-hp GLC 43 as the top-of-the-line version of the GLC-Class in terms of power and performance, this model – available in traditional SUV or coupe bodystyle – comes with the first twin-turbo V8 in the segment, able to generate 476 hp in the base version and 510 in the S version. This translates into 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.0 seconds and 3.8 seconds, respectively. The engine is paired with a 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT sport automatic transmission that offers ultra-quick gear shifting as well as an AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.
Drivers can choose between four different drive modes: Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. The air suspension is also adjustable, while the rear differential is limited-slip. The car is also fitted with a high-performance braking system.
Design-wise, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe sport the brand’s AMG Panamericana grille, once exclusively found on the diabolical AMG GT. Inside, the sport seats with generous lateral support clearly focus attention on the driving experience.
Exact pricing for the new model has not been confirmed, but since the GLC 43 carries a sticker price of $62,200, it’s expected that the GLC 63 will sell for somewhere around $90,000, the GLC 63 S for closer to $100,000. The automaker has also not announced exactly when the GLC 63 will go to market in Canada, but interested lovers of high-performance compact SUVs may want to start saving their pennies now!
