Buyers will have one less brand to choose from in 2011, as Ford has officially announced that dealers were instructed to take their Mercury signs down on December 31, 2010.
The news hasn’t come as a surprise. The 1,700 Mercury dealers were notified in June 2010 that production would cease in October, except for the orders placed by the American government.
Never popular in Canada, Mercury threw in the towel here in 1999. History seems to have repeated itself in the US, as Ford executives justified their decision by the fact that the brand had a meagre 0.8% market share.
