Champcar Title to Bourdais
Newman Haas' Sebastien Bourdais collected his second straight Champcar title on Sunday at Surfers Paradise, Australia. His two
main rivals, Paul Tracy and Oriol Servia were out early. Servia, who had the pole, was punted off at the first turn by Cristiano Da Matta.
"To be taken out at the start was not what we wanted," said Servia after the race. "Especially here, because I think we had a car that could fight for the win. I had good fun and I hope I did a good job for the fans after basically starting last and finishing fifth."
Tracy, the other contender for the championship, was out after just a few laps with gearbox problems.
Bourdais
was basically on cruise control after his two main rivals ran into trouble. Champcar, it must be said, has lost some of its luster from years past. Surfers Paradise was basically a parade at best. I clearly remember, not too many years ago, that this was one of the best races on the circuit. It's a shame to see what it has evolved into.
In a strange way Champcar faces the same problems that Formula 1 does. That is not enough cars, and clearly not enough racing. They both have become parades which are not good for either the fans watching, or for the teams competing.
