Payback is a treasured tradition in NASCAR racing. When a driver is wronged he has to hit back to balance the scales of stock car justice.

Now we learn that, like a jilted lover, the wronged party remembers the injury more than the one doing the damage.

Carl Edwards thinks he owes some payback to Kyle Busch after an early race incident cost him a shot at winning in the Sprint Cup race in Phoenix where he started from the pole. Instead Carl Edwards finished 28th.

Kyle Busch tried to make amends eventually speaking to Edwards the following week at Las Vegas. “I give him a lot of credit for coming over and talking to me and I think we will be fine,” said Edwards at the time.

Only after falling a little short of beating Busch at Bristol Edwards said things weren’t fine.

"I told him after Phoenix I still owe him one. But I'll save it up," said Carl Edwards this Sunday.

When asked if he was expecting retaliation from Edwards Busch replied "I have no idea what I'm owed from, so... You'll have to ask Carl. Normally when it's against you, you'll always remember it forever. I don't remember what I did that made him mad. Apparently he still thinks that."

Apparently Kyle Busch forgot the Phoenix incident already.

When asked again to comment on Edwards’ post-race statement Kyle Busch added “Carl says what Carl says. I don't know. Apparently I have one coming. When and where it comes I do not know. I would say the same thing if I owed somebody else something, that I still owed him. When and where it comes is more to you than the other guy, so…" he voice trailed off and he made a raspberry sound as if saying he wasn’t worried about retribution.

While it’s unlikely that Carl will seek justice at the Auto Club Speedway this week, the short track Martinsville looms one week later.

And as the saying goes payback is a... (rhymes with witch).
