One of the many highlights of the all-new Mazda CX-5, which made its global debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show just a few hours ago, is the addition of a diesel engine.
Yes, folks: A SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine will accompany the second-generation CX-5 in Canada and the U.S. from the second half of 2017. It will be Mazda’s first diesel engine model in the North American market.
At a time when Volkswagen was forced to abandon its TDI engines on our continent, Mazda is doing the opposite, hoping to rival even hybrid-powered competitors.
“We’re confident this engine offers a smart new option for North American drivers who want both performance and fuel economy,” said Akira Marumoto, Mazda’s Executive Vice President and Representative Director.
The company insists the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 will meet North America’s strict emission standards and make the all-new Mazda CX-5 one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class. What’s more, Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control technologies help reduce diesel knock sound for a quieter and more pleasing sound.
Still, a part of us is disappointed that we won’t get a detuned version of the larger CX-9’s 2.5L turbo gasoline engine in higher trim levels. We’ll reserve our final judgement until we get a chance to take the new diesel-powered Mazda CX-5 on a test drive. Stay tuned!
