A recent survey by MetLife shows that women are perceived as having a slight edge behind the wheel, once again stirring a debate that's about as old as the automobile itself.

Only 39 percent of men believe they are safer drivers than their female counterparts, but fully 35 percent of men are unsure which gender is the safer driver.

Women, on the other hand, take a much more definitive stance – 51 percent say they are safer drivers, while a mere 24 percent are undecided.

Men, however, can take solace in the fact that they are more than twice as likely (58 percent vs. 26 percent) as women to be familiar with electronic stability control, according to the survey. In addition, almost twice as many men as women (24 percent vs. 13 percent) recognize the safety benefits of ESC for helping make people safer drivers.

One thing both genders can agree on is that most of them would be willing to pay extra to have upgraded technology features in their next car. Among the most desired technologies for women and men are navigation systems, forward collision warning, and rear-view cameras.
