There’s a chance Subaru will make a hybrid out of the next-generation WRX STI, a person familiar with the matter told Australia’s Motoring.
Subaru is reportedly working on a new powertrain that will incorporate a revised version of the FA20 2.0L turbocharged BOXER engine with an electric motor, not to mention a new 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Output could be up from the current WRX STI’s 305 horsepower, which will keep performance enthusiasts happy.
The same source told Motoring that a plug-in hybrid version should break cover at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2018. This, obviously, will help Subaru meet more stringent emissions standards, especially in the U.S.
