The Nissan FORUM could very well represent the next revolution in family transportation. From its trackless sliding side doors and elimination of traditional B-pillars to an interior featuring a multi-position swivelling second-row seat as well as next-generation entertainment and family communication technologies, the FORUM is set to make its world debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, in January 2008. This concept might just reinvent the way people hit the road.

All aboard
As its name suggests, the FORUM is designed as a "gathering place" for adults and children whose schedules are filled with various activities. Up front is the parents' zone, with advanced information technology controls and seats designed to enhance driving pleasure. The rear zone is the dedicated kids' space, where they can feel comfortable and entertained.

Bold styling

The FORUM Concept adds a higher level of dramatic styling through its wide stance, high beltline, wide-open visibility and aggressive front end appearance. Design innovations include wide-opening front doors (90 degrees), the lack of B-pillars and long-sliding side doors that create exceptional access to the last two rows of seats.

Classy interior
Inside, everything is designed to offer first-class comfort: leather-appointed seats, rich aluminum and wood trim, advanced communication systems, Bluetooth wireless technology, mood lighting, 100-percent wool carpeting, "Turntable Seating" (second-row bucket seats that rotate 90 degrees to either side), not to mention a host of other innovative features like the built-in console-mounted microwave, sized to fit a standard bag of popcorn.

A showcase for mobile communication technologies
The interior of the FORUM Concept was developed by Nissan in conjunction with Bose, a world leader in sound systems. Close watch on rear occupants is provided by the "Kids Cam" monitoring system, which uses headliner-mounted, second- and third-row cameras connected to the LCD display monitor on the main instrument panel. The driver can even communicate with every other occupant through the audio muting "Time Out" system.

Respecting the environment
A production model based on this concept would likely include a clean diesel engine or another environmentally-friendly powerplant. In fact, Nissan has already announced that it will be offering a clean diesel engine in the United States in the next-generation Maxima. A similar engine would be a definite consideration for a vehicle like the FORUM.

Redefining family transportation
For Nissan, vehicles just need to evolve along with changing family dynamics. With the FORUM, it's all about dedicated moments for family fun, entertainment and communication. This vehicle is a great place to gather together and rediscover each other once in a while.

Created by Nissan Design America, the FORUM Concept sure looks like the future of family transportation. Further details will be announced at the NAIAS.
