So, the Insurance Institute is telling a parent like me that if I buy a compact car, I'm irresponsible, since none are safe enough for my children. Come on. They're also encouraging people to buy bigger, more expensive and thirstier vehicles if they want to be safe, in a time where we should be downsizing instead.
The safest cars and trucks are the ones with the safest drivers behind the wheel, not the ones with the most airbags and electronic gizmos. When I was a kid, I didn't wear a helmet when I was riding my bike. I fell a few times and got my share of cuts and bruises, of course, but I learned what happens when I don't look where I'm going. The same thing applies to people driving motor vehicles. I guess 'learning the hard way' isn't what it used to be.
Instead of offering useless graduate rebates, I'll applaud the first automotive manufacturer that will offer a free advanced driving course to all those under 20 years old who buy a new car in their dealerships. These kids will learn how to react in an emergency situation with their own vehicle, they will become better drivers, and over time, the roads will be safer for everyone. Prevention is the way to go.
So, what's to learn here? I'd say check out the IIHS' website for crash-test results, and I think side airbags are good for protecting your precious family sitting behind you. However, you should decide what safety means for you. If you think you need the added assurance of stability control, buy it. But don't feel forced to pay big bucks for features you might never use.
