The Draw:
Affordable, confidently styled and generously equipped, the last-generation Sonata was the biggest threat to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry yet. Look for 4- or 6-cylinder power, front-wheel drive all around, and a variety of option packages from simple to loaded. Feature content included a sunroof, automatic climate control, full power accessories, and more. Owners loved the Sonata’s style, roominess, big trunk, and all-around comfort. Four-cylinder fuel mileage is highly rated, as well.

What to Check:
Reliability looks solid, though shoppers are advised to check for tire, brake, and clutch wear (if applicable), after inspecting the body carefully for signs of rust at or beneath the lower edges of the doors, trunk, and hood. Look for broken or missing trim or switches on board, and ensure all windows and locks operate as expected -- both from the keyfob and door-mounted switches. Have the engine computer scanned to ensure no sensors are in need of replacement, and “listen” to the suspension for unwelcomed “popping” or “clunking” sounds caused by a worn-out part.
