The Draw: No other sports car on the road affordably combines the nostalgia, looks and recognition of the Ford Mustang—and the 2005 to 2009 model carried the model’s historically-rooted performance car goodness forward. An award-winning 4.6 litre V8 engine, rear drive all around, and a variety of special packages and options added to the high-value package. Convertible and coupe models were available with automatic or manual transmissions. Aftermarket support is huge—so owners will have no trouble customizing their used Mustang to their exact tastes. Favorite features included the color-selectable gauges and mood lighting, as well as the potent up-level stereo system.

The Checks:
Be sure the Mustang’s seller isn’t trying to pass off an expensive tire or brake replacement by inspecting the condition of these consumable parts. On convertible models, check for signs of leakage, which could include damp footwell carpeting or a mildew smell inside the car. Inspect the body, especially around panel edges, for signs of rust. Double check all on-board electronics, and confirm the model’s battery is healthy and holds a charge. Any grinding or binding sensations at the rear of the car while driving or cornering could indicate a rear differential that’s on its way out. Ditto a high-pitch whining noise at speed.
