The Draw: Fuel-efficient performance, hatchback flexibility and German-engineered refinement combined in this version of the hot-hatch that started it all. Here’s a car noted for its easygoing character, everyday usability and tremendous fun-factor. Look for a two-litre turbo engine on all models, available DSG transmission technology, and upscale features like automatic climate control, xenon lights and heated leather seats. Both 3 and 5-door models were available, too.

Checks: Inspect the tailpipe with the engine running, preferably at operating temperature and before driving, looking for any signs of blue or white smoke that could indicate a problem with the turbocharger or cylinder head. Insist on starting the engine from cold and watching the tailpipe for smoke as it warms to operating temperature before your drive. Carefully touch the muffler to ensure the seller hasn’t pre-warmed the car ahead of your arrival to conceal a smoking issue.

Numerous owners have reported electronic issues requiring reprogramming of the DSG transmission, so stick to a manual box where possible. If performance seems ‘weak’ or inconsistent, a blocked PCV valve or worn out diverter valve could be to blame. These issues are relatively minor and easy to fix-- though your potential used GTI candidate should be inspected by a VW-trained mechanic if you’re not confident in how it’s running.
