VTG Enhanced Turbo Promises More Power and Greater Efficiency than Current Turbo
While Porsche wasn't the first to use turbochargers to boost an engine's power, its iconic 911 Turbo model, initially shown at the Paris
Motor Show in 1974, was the "world's first series production sports car with an exhaust gas turbocharger." Now the 911 Turbo is legendary in the exotic sports car segment. Comparing the 260-horsepower output of the earliest 911 (930) Turbos to today's lineup of midsize family sedans makes them seem almost commonplace, but the lightweight cars were blistering performers in there time, on the street and the racetrack.
Porsche will celebrate 100 years of turbocharging, which takes place November 16, 2005, a century after Swiss engineer Dr. Alfred Buchi received the patent for his exhaust gas turbocharger then described as a "combustion machine consisting of a compressor (turbine compressor), a piston
engine, and a turbine in sequential arrangement,"* by introducing a new technology on its top-line 911 Turbo when it debuts next year, dubbed Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG). As the name suggests, VTG "continuously adjusts the angle of the compressor's turbine blades," explains Porsche in a press release. It's a world first for turbocharged gasoline engines, and is said to advance "the flexibility and efficiency" of turbocharged engines.
Porsche claims the technology, which was first applied to diesel engines in the early 1990s, enhances its horizontally-opposed, turbocharged six-cylinder engine's responsiveness, especially at low revs.
